Retired hawker Chow Meng Cheng, 70, just won a one-bedroom condominium in Normanton Park after spending around S $ 3 on aloe vera gel and a digital voucher for nasi lemak on the Lazada e-commerce platform. The condominium, valued at S $ 1 million, is a giveaway co-sponsored by real estate agency PropNex.

Lazada PropNex giveaway winner

To enter the raffle, Lazada buyers had to collect “golden keys” by completing tasks and playing an in-app game. Duties include recommending friends to the Lazzie Star game and purchasing the PropNex edition of Monopoly from the store. As buyers collected more keys, their chances of winning the condo increased.

The draw coincided with this year’s 11.11 event, which takes place on November 11 each year, a multi-billion dollar online shopping extravaganza from various ecommerce platforms like Lazada and Shopee.

According to published reportsMr. Chow sold fish noodle soup for over 30 years to support his family of five. After being introduced to the game by his daughter, he began to learn to play the game Lazzie Star, which she also played.

When Chow reached level 25 in the game, he had already won five Gold Keys. After spending just S $ 3.41 on aloe vera gel and a digital voucher for nasi lemak, Chow managed to claim the game’s winning golden key.

Its price, a T2 Normanton Park condominium unit, is still under development and is expected to be completed by early 2023. Developed by Kingsford Huray Development, this is a large 99-year leasehold project of 1,862 units over 661,005 square feet ground. Its nearest MRT is Kent Ridge MRT.

A one-bedroom unit in the luxury condominium can measure between 484 and 651 square feet with an average price per square foot of S $ 1,900 today.

Chow admitted he was surprised at his victory and initially thought it was a scam when contacted by Team Lazada. However, he has been using e-commerce apps like Lazada since 2017 and has made more online purchases of essentials since the start of the pandemic. As for what Chow would do with his victory, that’s something he and his family will decide.

If Chow already owns a property, such as an HDB apartment or private property, he will be subject to the Additional stamp duty for buyers (ABSD) if the Normanton Park condo is their 2nd property – this is 12% of the property’s value (for Singapore citizens) and 15% (for Singapore PRs). There will also be stamp duty payable. He can, however, request an ABSD discount if he sells his first property within six months of obtaining his Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP) or Statutory Certificate of Completion (CSC), whichever comes first.

Offering condominiums as a price is nothing new at all. In fact, six months ago, in May 2021, the Hong Kong tycoons – organized by real estate developer Sino Group’s Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation and Chinese Estates Holdings Limited – offered a HK $ 10.8 million (S $ 1.836 million) apartment in a lottery to get more people vaccinated against COVID-19. When the lottery was announced, jab bookings exploded.

the eventual winner from Grand Central Apartment in Cheung Sha Wan was a 35-year-old chef from Hong Kong nicknamed Lee. In an interview, Lee said, “When I was first informed that I was the winner of the Phase 1 raffle, I was so excited and happy that I never thought I would. would have the chance to win the grand prize! “

Twenty other winners, which included a Filipino domestic helper, a French student (who was studying in Hong Kong), a manicurist, a doctor and a pastry chef, also won a credit card with a stored value of HK $ 100,000 (17 S $ 412) each.

That’s not all – there is now a Phase 2 draw which has been extended until November 30, 2021. There is a grand prize, which is also a brand new 468 square foot apartment at Grand Central in Kwun Tong, and a senior citizen prize, where 200 people aged 70 and over and more have the chance to walk away with a prepaid or credit card with a stored value of HK $ 10,000 (S $ 1,740) each.
